When your dog is in a "sit" position, take a training treat from his nose and lower it down to the ground between his feet. Most dogs will lay down to get the treat. If it happens that your dog merely backs up, then have your dog sitting with his back end against a wall so that he can't back up. After doing this a few times, begin adding the cue word "down". Practice at it a few times, and your dog will get it.

You can try something called luring. You get a treat that your dog will really enjoy (very small piece of hot dog), hold the treat to the dogs nose and slowly place it down between his legs. He should follow your hand with his nose causing his body to drop into position. Then give the treat and praise. Do this for a couple of 5 minute sessions a day. Once he gets the hang of it start to tell him "down" as soon as he starts .

Just press down between the shoulder blades while saying "lay" or whatever the command is. remember to reward the dog for doing well. Practice it everyday or the dog will forget.

Get your dog to sit and then pull his front legs towards you with one hand and push lighty on his shoulders until he's laying down. While you're doing this tell him down, down. This is how I got my dogs to do it. Don't forget the treats!!
