You will file as single. Your status is determined by your marital status on December 31.

You won't be responsible for his tax debt for this year. Depending on circumstances, you might be for debt incurred from prior tax returns, or you might not be.

If there was income while you were still married that came to both of you, then you could be responsible for taxes on that.

Vanchaser (above) is totally incorrect. Your status for filing is based on the last day of the year (i.e., December 31). Since you were divorced in March, that means you are both Single for tax filing purposes. If you have children, one or both could be Head of Household depending upon custody and other factors.

The issue of debt (other than taxes) from credit cards, mortgage, etc. is joint up to and including the date of divorce - but I would imagine those items were addressed in the divorce decree.

Nope! Up to the end of the marriage, maybe. But the moment that the judge's gavel fell, you were dropped off the hook for anything else that he did AFTER the divorce.

As far as the IRS is concerned, you're considered single for the entire year since you were single on 12/31/2006. However if you were involved in anything shady prior to the divorce in cahoots with your then husband, they CAN come looking to you for any tax related to that. It's much less likely now that you are divorced but it IS still possible.

You shouldn't be you were legally divorced and seperated right. I think if your living together and it's more than 1/2 the year certain things apply to you to having to do your taxes together still. Sounds like you weren't so you should not have to file together this year. In the taxes handbook like 1040's it has all this info about how to file.
