My son and I are in the remodeling business. It all depends on how much money you have to spend. You might be able to just clean them, which is the least expensive thing to do. Your other option is to go to Home Depot an rent for $100 a day, a floor sander. It is a very heavy machine, which you push across the floor, but you have to be very careful that you do not dig a ditch when you get to a wall. That looks bad and it can not be fixed without tearing out much of the floor. When you have done that, which will take about two days, then you rent a floor screen, which will smooth out the surface. Then you vacuum and clean the floor with paint thinner (Do not use any water based products, as they will warp the wood.) and you apply a stain. Then you wait for that to dry (oil based stains take longer than water based). Then you apply two coats of polyurethane. This process will take you about 4-5 days. It will cost you about $400. If you hire some one to do it they will cost you about $2000. Hope this info. helps.

I just did our floors, hire it out if you can afford it.
If you decide to tackle it yourself, there are a couple different sanders you can rent. There are drum sanders and pad sanders.
If the floor is in bad shape a drum sander is very aggressive and will take it down to good wood fast. BUT the drum sander can be tricky, stop to long in one spot and you get a nice gouge fast. The pad sander is more of a touch up for floors that are in decent shape but just need the top couple thousandsth of an inch removed. Even with 36 grit paper on a pad sander you won't be able to tear up your floors.
Pushing a sander around all day for several days straight will wear you out.
It would be best to move out for this project for a few weeks to do the whole house in one shot if you can.

I have done my own and afterward wished I would have had it done by a professional. They have all the little "extra" tools etc. that make it a lot easier and do a better job. Plus it can be quite messy if proper precautions are not taken to contain the dust. You need different grits of sandpaper for different stages of sanding and they know when to do what. Save yourself some aggravation and have it done professionally.

Get your vet or groomer to show you how to safely trim your cat's claws, and that will prevent damage. We have hardwood floors, and I can honestly say that the cats really are not responsible for more than 1% of the scratches. Call me cruel, but I find it hilarious to watch the cats slip and slide a bit on the wood floors, especially after a good mop and wax.

It's always easier but more expensive to have someone else do it. All you have to do is sand it down to bare wood with a belt sander to get all the scratches outthen just refinish it.
