None of the above. The only church with true prophets is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Well, Buddhism has a few very interesting wise people. The Dalai Lama and Thich Nhat Hanh come to mind.
Mother Teresa was very inspiring in Christianity. In Hinduism Gandhi was obviously a candidate.
I also think Karen Armstrong is very interesting and profound (and well researched).

The ones who know and examine the world and themselves; and vigilantly control their mind, body and spirit; plus those who help others with no desire of reward and also those who submit to truth should surely be known as sages.
Most faiths have monastic sects, these are the ones who act as storehouses for the masses of knowledge and teachings within that particular religion (often the teachings are passed down the line all the way from the formation of the religion), these are often learned and wise individuals whom can in many cases be seen as sages of wisdom.

Of the religions there, the only folks I would consider sages are ones who take a stand for equality, justice and the rights of all people to their own beliefs.
Only one I think fits in the "sage" would be the Dali Lama Tenzin Gyatso. A very wise, and holy man, who I think fits the bill.

In the Christian book known as the New Testament, there is a person known as the HOLY SPIRIT. He is alive and on planet earth today. You can come to know him personally if you follow the instructions in the New Testament. The HOLY SPIRIT is the only living sage on the earth today. He knows all, loves all, teaches everything, provides perfect guidance. He is somewhat like "the Force" in the "Star Wars" movies, except that the HOLY SPIRIT is real. All other so-called sages are liars and con artists, or they are fools who have been misled by liars and con artists. There is only one TRUE GOD, only one HOLY BOOK, and only one HOLY SPIRIT.

I'd like to second Thich Nhat Hanh and also add Charlotte Joko Beck. Both very wise I think.
Perhaps more controversially I'd also like to propose Luke Rhinehart (real name George Cockcroft), solely on the basis of his book "Adventures of Wim" which set me on the path to wherever my spiritual journey is heading. Irreverent, a bit rude and perhaps rubbish, nevertheless, it showed me how to find (my) 'Ultimate Truth'!
Good question!

The majority of great thinkers WERE not, and ARE not, cult members. Religion from long standing tradition, stifles free thinking and opposes Independence.

Anyone who takes the time to listen for guidance.
Its not who makes the most noise, its who makes the most progress along their spiritual path.

You didn't ask for Jewish sages (curious), but one of the many living Jewish sages would be Adin Steinsaltz.
