I think we should start using air-ships again with some augmented technology. Though we won't get the speed of jet liners, those air-ships are really good means of transportation.

The old airships (1) were helpless in a wind of more than 40 mph, and (2) needed hundreds of ground crew to help them land safely. Maybe we can fix (2) with modern automation, power winches, or whatever, but (1) will always be a problem.

Time is money. People would rather spend the money to get there faster. Airships can not fly as high as comerical aircraft and are subject to the weather as far as comfort of the flight.

It would be interesting and nice to see the return of the airships.
In Germany a group tried to develop the Cargo lifter which was an airship designed to lift heavy cargos, but the venture failed from lack of investment right after they completed the hanger to built the ship.

1. The Hindenburg! 2. The slow speed of travel. (people want to get to places more quickly). 3. Helium is now preferred over hydrogen as the lighter than air gass. Helium has a 1/3 less lifting ability.
