My doctor reffered me to an outpatients psychiatric department for analysis back in September. However, refferals in the UK take a LONG time to come through, and now it's February and there's still no sign.

So, while waiting, I figured i'd try to understand myself a bit better by looking stuff up online, and did a bunch of those self-diagnosis tests (of course, they're 90% rubbish, but they can be used as a point for further research) and after looking into both carefully, whilst in a rarely stable mood (lol) it seems I match both borderline and bipolar symptoms. However, even where there are differences, I take from each side, so I can't get a clear-cut answer.

Is it possible to be both?

And yes, I know when I go in for my evalauation they'll tell me, but right now I don't know how long that might be, and i'd rather get myself well-informed while i'm in the state of mind to do so than go in clueless.

Many thanks,
Emma

p.s. i'm 17, female, if that helps?

well i am bipolar and boredline. most people with borderline also have bipolar. there arent many diffrences, but there are a few. as for the seeing things in black or white, theres never a middle ground. or sometimes it can always be middle ground with no answers on either side. you can go back and forth quite often. your relationships, with the people close to you, will suffer with borderline.mainly you want attention so bad, but when anyone gets to close you push them away, even though you crave there approval and attention and love. you tend to self harm with borderline, but can also be a bipolar symptom to. theres so many questions that dont seem to have answers. if your referals are taking long talk with your parents to start making calls, everyday if you have to. its important to get constant therapy and learn to cope with life with both of these things. they treat bipolar with therapy and meds, and borderline there is no meds really that can help, the only way i know is to get treatment and therapy and try to learn to rethink your ways of living and doing things and how you react to things. keep doing your research online its a good way to get information, and dont give up, it will be a very long road but its worth it in the end. good luck hope things work out for you.

I am Borderline, but have also been listed as bipolar in the past. I think that you can have some of both, as people really do not fit in a box with a label no matter how much we try to. I also think that Borderline is a lot of symptoms that do not fit in with any thing else so they became the a diagnosis of their own. I congerlate you on trying to be well informed before you go in, this helps a lot. You may also make up a list of questions you have and take it with you. Also I don't know if you can get this book in the UK, but perhaps you can get it on line. It is called " I hate you, don't leave me" and is a very good book on Borderline. I wish you all the best.

You cannot be labeled borderline until after age 18 technically. A 17 yr old has not fully formed an identity and personality.

Now, if you still have borderline traits when you are 25, then it would be worth considering.

Wait to see the doc and stop reading about labels on the net... you are going to make yourself worse off and more symptomatic. I have seen it time and time again.

Referrals take a long time in the US too, at least they do where I am. Is there any way you can just call a psychiatrist's office & get an appointment without a referral?
I would imagine it is possible to be both. I have both panic and anxiety disorder, among a whole lot of other things, OCD, clinical depression...
Just hang in there & see if there's a way around that referral.

classic bipolar supplies cycles of being depressed, down, listless, hopeless, self-hating, alternated with the 'highs' of being under pressure, wanting to act, valuable previous the rational, crammed with grand schemes and able to lead them to take place, then finally paranoid. The cycle is rhythmic by the years - an entire 365 days or weeks or days. form 2 bipolars get depressed, yet do not tend to get manic till triggered by particular drugs or drugs or different activities, yet 3s and 4s instruct the cyclic development of highs and lows by the years. Borderline character illness has numerous features, alongside with undertaking with relationships, considered one of those black and white questioning the place human beings are 'all solid' or 'all undesirable' with out gray section - even the comparable guy or woman could be lowest of the low one minute then an absolute ask your self the subsequent. Emotional activities are comparable, with a extreme point of drama and no obvious ability to earnings approximately emotional concerns. There are different features i don't remember. No diagnosis might desire to be made with no finished psych show screen, and there are lots and lots and many maladies available. My advice to you would be to look out to your guy or woman psychological wellness in the beginning. in case you are able to manage the angel/devil characterisation, and you have a solid help community and don't sense you would be unable to cope, then ultimate desires to the two considered one of you. If, on the different hand, you're commencing as much as lose it, then it's time to withdraw to your guy or woman sanity. For the insults, I recommend staying calm and rational and protecting a solid theory on your guy or woman head of what you recommend to assert, so as that a minimum of considered one of you is calm. i don't be attentive to what help exists on your section - psychiatric help seems to be like thinly unfold throughout.
