Two reasons.

1. Because it is law that your kids are in car seats, so the car seat makers have you between a rock and a hard place. I guess we should feel lucky they don't charge more.

2. Because liability insurance is incredibly high. Children's safety products are one of the most "lawsuit" ready items we buy. If a kid is injured or killed the first company that gets sued is the car seat manufacturer. They have to pass the costs on to the consumers.

Because you live in a culture of paranoid, neurotic parents who will pay unreasonable amounts of money for over-hyped infant welfare merchandise, and companies take advantage of that. They also have to subsidize the cost of lawsuit-happy, Blame Everyone But Me couples, and their close relatives, Mr. and Mrs. There's No Such Thing as Just An Accident, It Has To Be Someone's Fault and They Have to Pay.

I think it is one of those things where you NEED it. It is necessary for both safety and legal reasons, so they can charge you an arm and a leg and they know you will still pay it.

Its like a car. Do you really think that it really costs $15,000 for supplies, shipping and workmanship to make a car? Same thing.

It all depends on which one you buy. My son's first one was $100, I didn't mind paying that. It only went to 22lbs. The 2nd one he got was about $180, and will last him for a long time(it converts to a booster seat). Now the 2nd one I bought him says it can go from 5-80lbs, so if you buy one of those right away for $180-$250 your set. Babies aren't cheap, known fact. =)

Cost so much? There are carseats out there for $30...

The more expensive ones have different features, like reclining seats, cushier padding, fancy designs. My daughter has this one

I AM HOPING it's because of the quality and saftey assurance! Labor(workmanship) is added in their too! Then again nothing is 100%, because the highchairs out now can get pricy too, and some aren't safe..Like the five height adjustable ones were falling apart with kids in them! Hopefully we aren't paying for the name!

it takes alot to make them all the straps and to make it safe, or so the theory goes. I think many baby things cost so much because you have to have them and what ae you going to do you just have to pay it.
FYI evenflo carseats are cheaper but they have been proven unsafe and have been rated the lowest every year by cosumer reports

Don't know. If you have financial difficulties, the Red Cross gives them to parents who take a free class on how to use them properly.

Because its still cheaper than sending your kid to the ER if you get in an accident without them being in a carseat.
