as to why they would go out, get a dog, and then banish to live outside on a chain or in a pen for the rest of its life?? Don't people understand that the dog is a pack animal and should be in the house with its owners ( the pack) . To tie a dog outside for its entire life is cruel...

Here's your answer as to why the people who tie dogs up out side or enclosed them in a pen for the dogs entire life won't answer you........ Because they are NOT dog lovers, too lazy, misinformed, and can really careless for the dog. That dog would have a better life running the streets, at least that way he/she might get lucky and be found by a dog lover and live a happy life. Hmmm there's and idea?

You have made an excellent point. Let's say a person chains their dog outside because they want a "guard dog." How the heck is it going to guard you if it's chained outside or enclosed in a pen? If they're looking for something to alert them to strangers, buy an electronic alarm system. In the long run, the alarm system is cheaper. It doesn't bark all night, you don't have to feed it or take it to the vet, you don't have to worry if it's freezing in the winter or roasting in the summer, and doesn't care if you don't interact with it once or twice a day to feed it. You can even go on vacation and not have to worry about it.
Having a dog inside the house has nothing to do with spoiling it or not realizing pack order, it's about being humane. Sure wolves and coyotes live outside and survive. They are also part of a pack, which means companionship and interaction from the others in the pack. I believe that depriving any animal of enough interaction with other living things is cruel.

I agree with you, it is so cruel! Unfortunately, ignorance is bliss and you would think in the year 2007 people know better. In most cases you just have to talk & listen to those irresponsible owners and find that they all have some backward thinking that their dog is just an animal to guard their house the meaner or more aggressive the better...what a shame! I'm afraid, that a lot of them have lost their humanity!

Most people that do that just do not understand the responsibility of caring for another living thing. Tells a lot about the person that owns it.For the most part they are self centred and selfish. Its a shame because that dog will stay on that chain forever and still love the jerk that put him there.

I totally agree. I watch animal plantet and watch programes like houstan spca and im amazed. In england are dogs are mainly inside. Ive never seen dogs in yards or tied up outside houses! Is it really wide spread there? I know crulety goes on everywhere. But whats the point of having a dog tied up outside its hardly protecting your house when its tied up. All dogs want is to snuggle up with there owners!

People like that don't deserve a dog. People take animals for granted. They buy this cute little puppy, and when they get bored of it or no longer have time for it, they throw them in the back yard and ignore the poor animal. Animals are a big responsibility that some people just are not cut out for. It's a sad state of affairs.

We have 2 dogs, an 8-year-old German shepherd and a 14 month bloodhound (so cute!). Since both of my parents work during the day and I get home around 3, they stay outside on their runs with food and water until someone's home to bring them in or let them loose. But to answer your question, leaving them outside constantly is totally unacceptable.

there is no justifiable answer to give you when people tie their dogs outside like that if they think they can give you an answer then they are lying to themselves or they are completely nuts. someone should tie those people outside for a while so they can see what it is like

You should judge the particular case, not just make a generalized statement. People have different ways to care for their animals and their way isn't necessarily wrong just because I do it differently.
My dogs all live inside, but I used to have a GSD who *preferred* to be outside. He had a very nice fenced in area and would accompany me on my chores. I would also have him out to work or play a couple times a day, and my son would take him out as well. He probably got more attention than many inside dogs do! It can work well, if the people are committed. Not to mention, some dogs do prefer to be outside, especially heavy coated breeds like Mals and Sibes. Should people FORCE their dog to live inside if all he wants is to be out?
Boy, this question sure brought out all the AR nuts!!! To bad they know so little about dogs.

i think they do this just to say "OH I HAVE A DOG"!!
i hate people like that what's the point f your only going to see him/her when you throw food out to him/her.
if the dog is too big then you should have thought about that before you got the dog. (sorry kinda went off there)
