It can range anywhere from minor, which would be redness on an exposed body part to severe which would be complete numbness and the body part turning black due to lack of blood flow to the body part.

Frost bite causes the exposed part of the body to become white due to slowing blood circulation to the affected part. If frost bite causes further serious damage, that part will become black due to death of tissue.

It looks bad; imagine cristal ice froming under your skin and tearing it. It's bad, an then the skin start to die around it. It can go fron something painful but harmless to somthing that require amputation.
