because carbon has been burned to produce the electricity. Eg. burning coal, wood or oil.
All energy on this planet comes from the sun. most of it has been made over millions of years(coal and oil) life (plants and animals) get energy from the sun. so it will all run out one day. if we used renewable energy (wind farms, hydroelectric plants) we would not destroy the atmosphere.

Take it this way
I ask you how can wasting food contribute to shortage of food ?
Its along the same line. By wasting electricity you waste resource that others might be able to use. Also with the generation of electric you thus waste raw materials IE coal and oil stuff to burn basically. When you need to generate power you cause pollution so take it to the context of my question.
You waste food that other might be able to eat. You cause some of the food in the market to be lost thus if demand goes up due to people wasting more food is needed. Say normally some of the leftovers go to the poor people demand goes up supply stays the same no food for the poor. Almost the same thing, sorry could no come up with a better example.

Any method of electricity generation causes pollution of some kind or another, be it coal-fired, nuclear, wind or hydro-electric. So wasting electricity is causing pollution by not minimising the need for power. Electricity is produced on demand from consumers, it can not be stored, so to minimise the amount generated and thus the amount of pollution do not waste it.

The demand for energy will always be present. Making homes more efficient is the key. Wasted energy comes in many forms. Poor insulation is one of the biggest factors.
If homeowners paid more attention to making their homes more efficient, energy demands would lessen significantly. Most electric today is made from the burning of coal. The less coal burned, the less pollution.

Some power stations are nuclear and some are oil or coal fired. Nuclear power stations do not create polution whilst the oil and coal ones do.
All powerstations are wired togeather into the National Grid, if an area is experiencing a surge and its local power station cannot cope, the Grid will pull in electricity from some where else in the country where there is spare capacity. So if we are wasting electricity, it puts more demand on the nations power stations causing more pollution from the fossil fuel burning ones.
We really need nuclear powered stations and all the moaning minnies need to realise that we cannot carry on using coal and oil and there just isnt enough wind or sun.

I think it's something to do with fossil fuels being burned in order to produce electricity. When they burn they release CO2 into the atmosphere which is a cause of global warming. If you didn't use so much electricity they wouldn't need to burn so many fuels to keep us all going and the planet would be able to cope better with the amount of emmissions. Do a search on "what can I do about climate change?" to find out more. I did this and found out a lot.

Whan wasting electricity at home you force the power company to produce more power. This results in the buning of oil or coal to turn the turbons and creat electricity.
Unless you have solar or wind power in your home and are not drawing power from the grid, but even the if you conserve energy you can sell your excess clean power back to the electric company and prevent them from burning as much fossil fuel.
In some parts of the country power is provided from hydroelectric plants. It is not widely known but these plants also are detrimental to the environment. They produce positively charged ions that can carry various carbons into the atmosphere.
They are no where close to coal and petroleum plants at pollution but they are not free from it either.

Wasting electricity anywhere causes the electric company to produce wasted kilowatts. In order to produce a kilowatt the electric company has to burn coal, oil, wood, tires, paper, anything to fuel their generators...this is where the polution comes into play.

Because the mashine/factory that produces the elctricity burns off fossil fuel and as a result pumps out tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere.

Increase in energy use results in increase in energy production. In the US, this generally means a coal burning power plant. Coal is dirty and destructive.
