Yes, you still have a few months, but many countries require you to have a passport that does not expire for 6-months as they issue 6-month visas.

It would be wise to renew it now. If you plan to travel this year or if an unexpected trip arises, most countries require a minimum of 6 six months validity upon arrival.

depends on the country you plan to travel to. some of them require that passports be valid for a certain period of time (6 months). if there are no travel plans, renew it when it expires - see below:

Application for Passport by Mail: DS-82

PLEASE PRINT OUT AND SUBMIT ONLY ONE-SIDED PAGES OF THE APPLICATION.

Please type or print legibly in black ink when completing all sections of this application.

For a list of Regional Passport Agencies, including their addresses and automated appointment system telephone numbers, please click here.

If you are overseas and need to apply for or renew your U.S. passport, please follow the instructions under the U.S. passport section in Tips for Americans Residing Abroad.

There are 4 criteria for using this form. Please use the following checklist to see if you are eligible to apply with a DS-82:

1.
I can submit my most recent passport AND
2.
I was at least 16 years old when my most recent passport was issued AND
3.
I was issued my most recent passport in the last 15 years AND
4.
I use the same name as on my most recent passport or since my passport was issued, I have had my named changed by marriage or court order and can submit proper documentation to reflect my name-change.

If you answered NO to any of the 4 statements above…STOP! You cannot use Form DS-82! You must apply on a DS-11. See links on the left.

Please follow instructions on pages 1 and 2 and read carefully pages 3 and 4. Complete, sign, and mail both pages of the application (printed on one-sided pages). See Helpful Hints for mailing your DS-82.

Note: Page1 of the DS-82 gives phone numbers to call for inquiries. If you have a question about the application process not answered by our website or want to know the status of a pending application, please call the The National Passport Information Center.

you'd manage to enter with the quickly-to-expire passport. there are countless countries which have agreed to settle for passports as a lot because the date of expiration: the U. S. and Canada are between them. overlook all that stuff about the I-ninety 4 card; our chum seems perplexed.

It's convenient to have a back up identification, so I do suggest for you to get it renewed for those just-in-case situations. If you live in the US, I believe you can get it renewed by sending it through your local post office.
