To get a reliable up to date operating system go to http://www.ubuntu.com . You can download it or order a CD. It's free plus you will get all the software that you will ever need free.

If your RAM is 256MB or more download the full version, if less download XUBUNTU.

the only legal way is to either go to an etailer such as http://www.dabs.com and buy an OEM version of XP home or XP pro buy with a new hard drive or mouse/keyboard for example to qualify, but even with a small 40GB Hard drive you can still save over the price of a retail version. this option will cost you around £100 approx in the UK depending on what hardware you buy to qualify for the OEM version of XP.
if you go this route it is best to copy your personal and irreplacable files and folders to external media such as a DVD/CD or external hard drive.

Yes i know you want free however unless you break the law by using a site such as limewire or bit torrent for example, and if want to expose your computer to a hard to remove if not impossible to remove malware infestation it is currently not possible.

you can contact microsoft.com to see if they can provide you with a copy of 200 or above for free but that is a slim to no hope option.

go and search online for a site that sells second hand systems but this will be more expensive than just buying the xp OEM.

alternatively try a site such as www.softpedia.com and see what freeware operating systems they have listed. though the only freeware operating system that i know of is linux in all its many varients.

finally have you looked for any old freeware programes that may do the job you need from the current new software?

good luck.

hi,
If u wana upgrade from 98 to 2000, U need some installation CD. there are no net upggrades available. 2000 maybe available on the p2p network but it isnt legal. So i prefer you to go for a new installation CD.Just post ur location so that any user here can try 2 send you if ur near.

Not going to happen. You may be able to get them from 360 Share. But they might be loaded with viruses and are not a legal version.
There is also bittorrent which has lots of programs that people post to share. Again, not legal but doable.
If your system is old enough to run win98, certainly don't try for anything beyond 2000.

You need to buy an upgrade package. Buy from either a regular PC store or Amazon or chance your arm with eBay. Any other route will mean you have a pirate copy and will be unable to get updates from Microsoft.
