okay, first, I need to know what breed of dog he/she is. many very socialized dogs will do things like that for attention. in fact, 99% of the destructive behavior of dogs can be attributed to a lack of attention, or confusion on his role in the pack. Outside that, here are some suggestions:
Take him to PetSmart and let him pick out a chewy toy. Rope bone, squeaker, whatever he likes (My dog is particularly fond of Barbequed pig's ears) when he feels lonely, or feels like tearing up the couch, he may simply start in on the rope bone or whatever.
discipline- you COULD do what people above have suggested and swat him with a newspaper when you catch him, but that requires you to catch him. Personally, I like to take the "Dog Whisperer" approach and identify the specific problem causing the behavior.
A better method of discipline would be to reinforce your role as the alpha of the pack. A dog is *NOT* your equal and they must always know that YOU are the alpha. that being said, the couch is for the higher humans to sit on and is NOT a chew toy for sparky. things you can do to reinforce your role as the pack leader are
1. do not EVER let your dog sleep with you in the bed, unless he absolutely knows that the bed is YOURS and you are allowing him, at your grace, to be there with him; however, that grace is subject to revocation at any time. (More effective to let him sleep at the foot of the bed.)
2. Dogs NEVER eat first. ALWAYS humans. This is how it works in a pack. Alphas always eat first, then, if the alphas allow it, the lower members of the pack may eat. You can reinforce this by , of course, not feeding him until after you've eaten, and you can even sit down by his doggie bowl, and enjoy your roast beef. If he gets curious and comes up to you, chase him off with a quick, snappy "GET!" (Get is the command I use to chase off my Dogs when they are somewhere they shouldn't be)
So, these are just a few suggestions. Check out the site below, it will give you some more pointers on how to establish your role as the alpha; once you've done that, you'll find that life for both you and your dog will become much more pleasant, and easier.

when you go upstairs sneak back down and catch him in the act then enforce that this is BAD! eg. pull him off the couch and look him in the eyes and point at the couch then say "BAR!" in a sharp tone then repeat NO! keep up the training and he should start to see that this is NOT his property.
you have to let the dog know you are boss and never ever let him think for once that he is higher in the pack then you because he will use it to his advantage, in fact totally ban him from the couch even for hugs yes this may sound a little unfair but it is the only way he will listen.
the [BAR] word is a way mother dogs let puppies know they have done wrong they utter a sharp bar sounding bark and the puppy obeys it generally works with most dogs and our dogs were truly terrible until we trained them what was good and bad and now they dont ever jump on furniture or go in the kitchen because weve enforced the bar word upon them
i hope this helps and good luck with the michevious little dog

I agree with Natalie (above) - Crating is the best thing to do. This is for his safety as well. Dogs can get into other things like live electrical cords and be killed. Crate your dog and stop this behavior right now - it is not going to get better if you keep things as they are.

Ah, certain. The mythical farm. nicely, i'm being a jerk because my chum truly did undertake his beagle out to a actual farm. that is only the variety of cliche. Your are properly about feeling undesirable for the canines. Labs are very kin orientated. Staying out interior the kennel all evening isn't a sturdy existence for this canines. you're properly about feeling undesirable on your son. He would experience that he's the single failing at this. everyone loses right here. that is extremely unhappy. That pronounced, you do ought to settle on. in case you detect you're not able to accomodate the canines as a pal you're obligated to locate it a house. in case you pick to grant it one extra shot at practise etc, comprehend the canines isn't the in common words one to be educated. All of you pick to do it together and pull together to make it a kin purpose and activity. regarded at in a positive mild, it would want to convey you all closer (as a canines could). interior the intervening time, even as you settle on, get some bitter apple spray to guard some products and attempt to anticipate the habit that is unacceptable. Tie a rattle-can to the lower back-%. as a trick, get a sprig bottle, on a daily basis walks, etc. in spite of your canines responds to. Your son will study a lesson from this no matter if you keep the canines or get rid of it. The lesson he learns is taken under consideration necessary. you're in fee if he learns a distinctive feature or no longer. I realized from dropping a canines that i'd under no circumstances get a canines till I owned my personal domicile. i determined this even as i develop into 16 from my figure's blunders, even though it develop into nevertheless a sturdy lesson. We gave up a canines because we had economic issues and had to flow an condominium and couldn't detect a puppy pleasant condominium. perhaps your son will study that to keep a canines, everyone has to artwork flat out and artwork together, or maybe he will study that dogs are like hats and consider to attempt them on. (NO!!!, unlike that) that is going to likely be not person-friendly for each human being to get rid of your canines, yet do not get yet another one interior the hopes that issues will be different. in spite of you settle on, ensure the canines is cared for interior the intervening time and is going to a house and under no circumstances a cage.

Put him in a kennel after he does it. Or... don't risk it & just keep him in the kennel at night.
Good luck!
