This only happens when we are in bed. late at night . we always take him outside before we settle down for the night. It's the last thing we do before going to bed ourselves. And we get up at 4.30 am

Hi Milko!!
Male pup takes CONSTANT attention on your part. If you at home, and it is raining out and cold, you would start from scratch with the potty training.
DO NOT ever punish or yell at your pup for doing this as it will only make matters worse and it may never go away.
When you first come home, no eye contact or talking to the pup. Put him out to pee, then once finished, greet him happily outside so if a little "slip up" happens its no big deal.
For your a male puppy need neutered. He will stop peeing on things if fixed, he is covering his territory, so house breaking trained in very difficult when he is a stud dog.

Some people have the common misconception that the more space a puppy has the better. A crated puppy feels more secure and typically will learn to hold it faster. Dogs naturally have the desire to be the head of their den, especially males. Also do not give him any food or water after you take him out before bed. Lastly relax, he'll learn soon enough, heck it takes humans 2 years to learn.

neuter him would be an option, raising his leg is a sign of marking. My dog didn't raise his leg 'till more than 1 year old since he is house trained, and he has no corner or pole to mark around my house/back yard. Maybe you should start putting diaper on him while he's sleeping, and let him out to relief himself once every several hours until he is house trained. 5 months old is too old not to be house trained. Clean up his mess immediately so he won't smell it and pee on it again. Also, take away his water at night after you let him relief himself for one last time.

Typical of the male gender.... they always have to make a "show" when they "go!" lol ( Bet you never thought you'd hear THAT coming from a man, huh? )
5 months old, and he should probably be paper trained a little better by now, but that's ok, some puppies tend to take a little longer getting into the swing of things. ( No pun, I swear! )
There's a couple of things you could probably do. You have to reinforce him that it is NOT acceptable to pee on the things that he is not supposed to. When you see him do it, give him a stern "NO!" and pull him away from his intended target. Show confidence and give him that "alpha dog" appearance, so he knows who is running the pack around your house!
Secondly, you can load up a spray bottle and quirt him on the nose when he attempts to pee where he is not supposed to. This tells the puppy that when he wets, he will get wet. THEN, show him where he is supposed to go, on the paper!
Puppies take relentless training, but eventually, they get it. Just remember, he's a little guy, and he's still learning. He's not trying to be bad, he just has to go, and puppies don't have their GPS coordinates dialed in at 5 months old! lol
When the puppy goes on the paper, give instant praise and reward. He will associate good behavior with reward, and inappropriate behavior as a squirt on the nose! Give him time, he'll get the picture!
Best of luck!

we have an 2 old great danes who go at nights and the only thing weve found is to leave the kitchen door open into the yard so that they can go out thus ending accidents
The other thing is to have a very strict cut off point for your pups drinking water at nights
weve done this in the past and it seems to work

make sure he doesnt drink after say 8pm. that will help.
DO NOT PUNISH HIM FOR PEEING IN YOUR KITCHEN. HES A PUP. only praise when he does it right. punishing will make him worse. the spray works.. but if you arent there you cant really stop him. am sorry but you will need to wake up every 4 hours and take him outside. hard but after a few nights he should get the ide that outside is for peeing - my pup is only 3 months old and holds his bladder all night. has done since i got him. and hes a tiny lil thing.
good luck.

Remember he's just a pup. Take him out to potty before you go to bed. then about 4 hrs. later. Then again, early in the morning.
If he has an accident inside show him the spot, tell him 'NO', in a loud firm voice. Then it's outside right away and if he goes praise him like crazy.

I had the same problem not to long ago, I used a spray on the walls that leaves an oder only dogs, with their sensitive noses, can smell & trust me on this they won't go anywhere near it.You can buy the spray at most pet stores, I think.

Just like a human baby he needs to be trained potty trained. Take him outside often in courage him to "go" outside, by saying go potty boy and when he does say good boy use treats to enhance what a good boy he is for "going" outside Never punish him for accidents that happen inside. Training takes time!!
