How much did you pay for the gun? If it was cheap then it was stolen.

one small but extremely important point - DON'T walk into your local sherrif's office with it. Take the numbers on a piece of paper. Some law enforcement types get very touchy about armed civilians coming through their door, and even if you've got no ammo and the gun in a case, someone is going to get pissy with you...it's better to avoid it than argue right or wrong over it...

Check with the local police. They can run the serial number through NCIC.
If the gun was reported stolen it will be on the computer list.

Go to the sheriffs office ask them to run a check. You'd much rather give it up than to be caught with a stolen handgun.
