Most states that I have lived in it is illegal to adjust your license plate in any way. That includes using colored tape to change numbers/letters, covering the plate to not allow it to be seen, not having a working light near the plate and even masking it with something to keep it from being read by those damn cameras.
It always makes me wonder....why is it legal to sell that spray stuff when it is illegal to use it?

🔴► Its not illegal because it doesn't do anything. Its no different then putting hair spray on your plate lol. There are license plate hide kits that flip your plate out of view and ones that cover the plate with a curtain so the plate is totally hidden... those do actually work but you never really know when you gonna get scanned anyways. Yes. according to the highway code, which you automatically agree to follow if you drive, bicycle or walk on the roads and pavements (sidewalks to you americans) doing anything to make your licence plate illegible or unreadable either by a camera or a person.

The fines are hefty, apparently not cleaning your licence plate so that cannot be read is also illegal.

A quick web search suggests it is about 1000 pounds plus points.

Here in the USA your license plate MUST be visible so it can be seen and readable. If my memory serves me correctly from at least 120 feet distance. (Here in Massachusetts)
