This is my first river cruise, would I be expected to dress up for the evening meal? Do I have to join in all the entertainments, I am on the shy side.

comfortable, casual and warm clothing ,during the day .

and a pretty frock for evenings .

Don't worry , on a cruise you will soon make friends
It is a close community of people . There are many singles among them, who will also feel like you .

You will not be compelled to join in all the entertainments .
That is up to you, entirely. They are there to add to your fun and pleasure ,

Enjoy your cruise, the Rhine valley is stunning,
and people are mostly friendly., They are all on holiday too .

The staff on a cruise are dedicated,
to make your cruise a good experience for you ,
You will feel pampered and protected .

Just relax and be yourself !

I wish i was going too .... SIGH.......

If you are on viking river cruise the dress if extremely casuall. More casual then you would expect. My customers are very pleasantly surprised by this approach. I love when they bring me back or send me pictures of themselves enjoying their cruise. The attire I see on a typical day would be khaki pants, golf shirt, light windbreaker fanny pack. The attire to the 'formal' dinner would be a silk blouse and black slacks. The pictures in the brochure are misleading. If you get an opportunity go to a website like cruisecritic.com and look at pictures of other customers who recently sailed.
