Yes, the German Chocolate Cake is nothing like the cake's of Germany. German's can't stand American cakes because we use to much sugar. Their cakes are usually layer cake. An 8" round cookie type wafer (graham) on the bottom with a flavored jelly spread thinly onto it. Then topped with a single layer 8" cake split in half. Usually there is a pudding type spread with a liqueur flavor added to it for aroma. Then they top off the pudding with the other half of the 8" cake. They use marzipan to seal it and then decorate it into a lovely thing that is very pleasing to the eye.
I ate a lot of cake in Germany.

Hi,
The Truth:
German Chocolate Cake (GCC) is not at all German? :) It originally comes from Dallas, Texas, and its name comes from the sweet chocolate baking bar, close in character to milk chocolate, developed for Baker's Chocolate Co. in 1852 by Sam German.
Receipe:
German Chocolate Cake:
Ingredients:
1/2 cup German sweet chocolate
1/2 cup boiling water
1 cup butter
1 cup sugar
4 egg yolks
4 egg whites, stiffly beaten
1 tsp vanilla
2 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup buttermilk
Cooking:
Melt chocolate in boiling water. Cream butter and sugar until fluffy, add egg yolks, vanilla, and chocolate. Add dry ingredients
alternately with buttermilk. Fold in egg whites. Pour into three pans, lined on bottoms with wax paper. Bake at 200 degrees C for 30-35 minutes. Frost tops with Coconut Pecan Frosting, leaving sides unfrosted.

German Chocolate Cake:
Ingredients:
2 cups flour
1 cup margarine or butter, softened
1 package of German Chocolate
2 cups sugar
1/2 cup water
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp baking soda
1 cup buttermilk
1/4 tsp salt
4 egg whites
4 egg yolks
Cooking:
Preheat oven to 200 degrees C. Then line the bottom of a round cake pan with wax paper. Melt the chocolate squares until they are completely melted. Stir well. Mix flour, baking soda and salt: set aside. Beat margarine (butter) and sugar in large bowl with electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy. Add egg yolks, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in chocolate mixture and vanilla. Add flour mixture alternately with buttermilk, beating after each addition until smooth. Beat egg whites in another large bowl with electric mixer on high speed until stiff peaks form. Gently stir into batter. Pour into prepared pans. Bake 30 minutes or until cake springs back when lightly touched in center. Immediately run spatula between the cake and sides of the pan. Cool 15 minutes and remove from the pan. Remove wax paper. Cool completely on wire racks. Spread Coconut-Pecan Frosting between layers and over top of cake.

German Chocolate Cake:
Ingredients:
1/2 cup semisweet chocolate
1 1/4 cups butter
2 cups sugar
4 eggs -- separated
1 tsp vanilla
2 cups flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup buttermilk
Cooking:
Melt chocolate and 1/4 cup of butter in heavy bottom pan. Let cool. Cream together remaining butter and sugar in medium bowl. Beat in egg yolks. Stir in vanilla and chocolate mixture. Sift together dry ingredients. Alternately add dry ingredients and buttermilk to chocolate mixture. Beat egg whites until stiff in large bowl. Fold in chocolate mixture. Pour cake batter evenly into the three prepared pans. Bake 30 minutes or until cake springs back. Let cool on racks.
