Barbaro was a great thoroughbred race horse. He ran and won 5 stakes races to qualify for the triple crown races, some of the most prestigious races in the US. He won the Kentucky Derby, the first of the 3 races, by an astonishing 6 and a half lenghts, which is considered quite a feat. He was the favorite to win the Preakness, the second race of the Triple Crown, but he took a bad step shortly after leaving the starting gate and broke his hind right leg. He had surgery the next day and had a metal plate and over 20 screws inserted in his leg. A month later he developed laminitis in his hind left leg, but everything went smoothly through December. The vet actually announced that Barbaro could be going home within a month because his broken leg had completely healed, the cast was removed, and he was walking on it. Unfortunately, Barbaro then got an abscess in his hind right hoof causing him to put more weight on his front legs where he soon developed laminitis. Ultimately the horse had 3 legs with laminitis and the other leg was healed, but would never be the same as it was before the injury. His owners faced the choice of allowing the colt to face a future of pain or to end his life peacefully and they chose the latter. Barbaro was euthanized last Monday morning.

ESPN.com has a really excellent video cronicling the colt's journey from winning the Kentucky Derby through his injury to some various footage of after he had been put down. You can view it here: http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/horse/news/story?id=2747087 you'll probably have to click on "Barbaro Loses Struggle for Survival" underneath the little video screen on the right.

Also, there is an amazing fan video showing all of Barbaro's races and wins, then coverage of his injury from the Preakness and his hospital stay during the following week. As this video was made while Barbaro was still alive, it has no footage of anything from after his death. you can view it here: http://www.youtube.com/p.swf?video_id=kmgf-ocQFbc&eurl=http%3A//video.yahoo.com/video/play%3Fei%3DUTF-8%26p%3DBarbaro%26qp_p%3Dbarbaro%26b%3D30%26oid%3D41b6e420a6c8c406%26rurl%3Dwww.y&iurl=http%3A//sjc-static12.sjc.youtube.com/vi/kmgf-ocQFbc/2.jpg&t=OEgsToPDskKetNxxdh4leGK15xuagD4i

Thanks for asking about our hero. It's nice that people from other countries have taken an interest in him too.

Well Barbaro was an undefeated race horse that won the Kentucky Derby in Lexington but then shortly after at the Preakness he broke out of the gate before the other horses but the vets checked him over and he was fine. So the race went on and at least 100 yards into the race he took a miss-step and shattered his right hind leg. He was then brought to the New Bolton Center in Pennsylvania where he was treated for 8 months and after trying so hard to save his life after that many months he had to get put down on January 29, 2007. Barbaro was undefeated in all the races he's ever been in except for the Preakness where America watched him fight for his life. If Barbaro would've not have shattered his leg we would've probably been the next one to have won the triple crown sense 1978. I still cry when i see pictures of him because i was a huge fan. I'll miss you Barbaro... and the world will too! We'll never forget the Undefeated Barbaro. <3

Barbaro was a special horse who had won the 2006 Kentucky Derby by the biggest margin lead in 60 years, unfortunately in the next race he did take a bad step and broke his hind leg a lot of people thought at that time he would be put down but the owner cared enough to give him a chance, he had several operations which he came foward like a champion but because of his other foot problems that developed he started to have severe pain that could not be controled properly for him and the owner's after a long battle made the decision which had to be very difficult to have Barbaro put to sleep, it a extremely difficult thing to do and you do feel a lot of sadness and remorse , it is a terrible decision you have to make I had to make that same decision 9 years ago and it haunts me every day of my life and it always will, a lot of questions in my mind of what if this. But Barbaro is in a new home with a lot of friend and I am sure he is just fine he has great company up there, I am sure the grounds right now are a little damp cause a lot of tears went with him, Rest well sweet Barbaro

ONLY THE BEST HORSE EVER!!!!!! He won the Kentucky Derby and a few weeks later, at the Preakness Stakes, shattered his hind leg. During a remarkable recovery, there became a problem with his other hind leg. So, January 29th, they euthanized (put down) Barbaro (THE BEST HORSE EVER!!)

Barbaro was a Thoroughbred race horse - had a SUPER shot at winning the Triple Crown - took a misstep and broke a back leg

they tried for 8 months to heal him - but the complications kept coming back - so to end his discomfort and poor quality of life - he was euthanized last Monday

Barbaro was a bay racehorse who was considered to be one of the most promising of the year. He won the Kentucky Derby and took a misstep in the Preakness therefore falling out. He shattered his cannon bone and was hospitalized for eight months. After falling ill of laminitis, his owners finally decided to put him down. He started nine races, finished eight. He won all of the eight races he finished.

Barbaro won the Kentucky Derby, broke his leg right out of the gates in the Preakness, and they tried to save him. They did surgery to repair his broken leg, he developed laminitis in his hoof, it got better, he developed it in another hoof, and they eventually put him down.

Winner of the 2006 Kentucky Derby, considered a contender for the Triple Crown. He broke his right rear leg in the Preakness on May 20, and fought for recovery for eight months before they had to euthanize him last Monday. As a result of the injury to his right hind, he developed laminitis in his left hind in July of '06. They thought they had things under control - the bones in his right hind had healed and was out of a cast - but he developed an abscess in his right hind foot, and as a result, he also developed laminitis in both front feet. At that point they decided to euthanize him, which IMHO was the only humane option.

PPN you are an idiot. Barbaro won the Kentucky Derby and then had to be pulled up in the second leg of the Triple Crown, the Preakness, and i know PPN doesnt know this but that is at Pimlico in Baltimore. PPN, dont answer questions when you do not know the answers, duh.

PPN. It is not helpful to answer questions you don't know anything about. The Preakness is not the last leg of the triple crown. Stop trying to answer questions just to get 2 points. It cheapens the whole point of this.
