Sounds more like a strong state of mind, a.k.a. consciousness.

This is an interesting question. I think you expect a religious answer, but still I'd like to write you my non-religious views, although I don't expect to convince you. Actually this is one of the things that convinced me that there is no metaphysic and immortal soul, but that all what we are is based on our brain functions. I mean I studied neuroscience and how every aspect of our thinking, feeling and personality depends on the brain and can be lost if the brain gets damaged. I don't believe that we would have such a brain with all these functions if it weren't necessary at all and the soul existed independently from it. So I believe that when the brain gets damaged, the mind and personality get damaged, so let me say, a part of the person ceases to be, just as I believe that the person ceases to be with death.

Happily, nothing at all.

Then again, how could it - it doesn't exist.

You say you know your soul is 'you'. Well that would have been forgivable in the first century BC but it doesnt sound like you've considered thought and emotion in neurobiological terms.

You aren't 'trapped' in your body. You are the body, your consciousness is rendered in physical patterns within your brain.

When you die that consciousness will fail and you will be no more.

The"soul" is part of the brain, having a damaged brain means the "soul" "self awareness" or conscience is foggy.

I would say that is a tough question _if_ you assume there is such a thing as a soul. I don't.
