You'll soon work this out as you begin to cook- it depends on your tastes as much as anything else, but some good ones to start with are;
tins; tomatoes, sweetcorn, tuna, chick peas
herbs and spices; ginger, coriander, rosemary, oregano, basil, cinnamon
fridge; onions, potatoes, garlic, chillis, tomato puree, fresh salad, veg and fruit- whatever you like, butter/ marg, milk, cheese, eggs
packets; pasta, rice, flour, sugar, lentils, noodles
freezer; veg- better than some fresh veg as freezing as soon as they are picked preserves vitamins and minerals best, fish, chicken breasts,
try choosing a new recipe to try once a week and you will soon get an idea as to what goes together, what you enjoy, and what is just too much work- this will also help you add new ingredients to your store cupboard, as well as try out new cooking methods. If you are making something, why not try making twice the amount you want and then freezing what remains uneaten- an instant supply of home cooked 'ready meals' for when you are in a rush!

Hi,

About a year ago I stumbled on this web page from BBC Food. The website is really good and I recommend the recipe finder page. Anyway the following link details about 31 essential items that you should have in your store cupboard. Some are more useful than others:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/back_to_basics/storecupboard.shtml

Hope this helps

If you are interested in making desserts, there are generally a few basic ingredients that you will need:
All-Purpose Flour
Baking Soda & Baking Powder
Vanilla Extract
Butter & Margarine
Eggs
Sugar
Nevertheless, one of the best things you can do is to choose and read your recipes first, and then buy the needed ingredients. An idea might be to choose a few recipes on the weekend, so that you can easily buy the supplies for the next week.
If you don't have a comprehensive cookbook, here are some good recipe websites:
