over 1 year of age is considered an adult dog
The human equivalent of a one-year-old cat or dog is actually between about 10 and 15 years. It has reached it's full growth and is sexually mature.
The second year is equivalent to about another 3 to 8 years in terms of physical and mental maturity, and each year thereafter is equivalent to only about 4 or 5 human years.

My breed is slow to mature, so I call them pups until they are 3 years old. However, you can tell when their growth period is over, if you feel the ribs.. Run your finger down the length of the longest ribs.. If they are knobby and bumpy, your dog is not yet finished his skeletal growth. ..they are much smoother when the bones are mature.
Most pups become dogs at about 18 months.

dogs do not fully mature until 2 years old. at 2 years old, they should have all of their adult teeth and very close to the size they will be when they are older. aslo..interesting facts, if a dog has beed breed for fighting, and has puppies, you wont see the "fighting" behavior until 2 years old. I learned that at the SPCA I worked for. but I still call my 2 and a half year old a puppy...just a term of love :0)
