The gas tube is the pipe on top of the barrel in which the gas piston travels. The gas piston is part of the bolt group, the rod that sticks out the front. When a round is fired, and the bullet reaches the gas port in the front of the barrel, part of the gas behind the bullet is channeled into the gas tube, which forces the piston and the bolt group to the rear, ejecting the spent case and chambering the next round from the magazine.

look at the right side of the gun, at the front of the action, or the back of the handguard. there will be a small lever, push it up untill the bottom nub locks into the top of the slot. now you should be able to lift the hand guard assembly upwards off of the gun. this is the gas tube and piston. you will need to clean it out occasionally(i do after every shooting session).

as someone else mentioned, the gas tube uses pressure from the barrel to reload the gun. it is very important to keep it clean, or the gun will not reload well.
