Built in 1886, Brighton's West Pier, a Grade I listed building has wallowed in limbo since 1975. The original concert hall fell into the sea and storms weakened its structure. After a suspected arson attack, fire fighters could not access the pier because it was unsafe. A Trust was set up to protect the West Pier but both English Heritage and the Heritage Lottery Fund refused to get behind their plans. The Trust now hopes to find alternative funds to save the pier.

The pier was built in 1866 and finally closed after lack of maintainance made it unsafe in 1975, it has been disintegrating ever since as no one has been able/had the funds to carry out repair work. Recently the pier has suffered several arson attacks. For a full history check out http://www.westpier.co.uk/index.htm
