My mom had a dachshund who had "anal leakage". Nasty stuff, smelled like bad fish. Anyway my mom would take her to the vet where they would squeeze them out. After a while, my mom got sick of paying for it, so she tried it a few times (with rubber gloves on, of course). It wasn't easy, and she didn't do it as good, so the glands would fill up faster. We finally figured that if we just let the dog lick her butt (my mom hated when she did, so she'd not let the dog do this before), it wouldn't drip and get on stuff.
Don't know if this really answers your question, but yes, there are anal glands in dogs, and they stink badly.

My dog gets his anal glands expressed at the vet's office. Vet does this during the rectal exam.
The groomer expresses the glands by applying pressure outside the anus.

i never heard of them being messaged but my dogs go every 6 weeks to get groomed and have there anal glands emptied so if there bothering your dog go to your local dog groomers and they will do it for normally nothing or it may be a small fee like 5 dollars at the most hope this helps you

there are some breeds like cavaliers that are more prone to anal gland problems. The dogs can't empty them so a trip to the vets is called for so they can be "massaged" or "squeezed" to be emptied. It doesn't smell too good! a bit like off fish, if you notice your dog scooting about on his/her bum that normal means they need emptying.

yes have them extracted any groomer, vet or yourself ( if trained) can do it... some are prone to anal gland issues ,, some get problems because of a bad diet.
