Can you take a medical leave at college for a mental disorder? If so, how does it work? Will it affect your financial aid? Does anyone know how the whole process works?

It varies by college. Generally you need to get a medical withdrawl form. Take that form to your mental health doctor...he will need to write that you are unable to complete the semester/term due to medical reasons and then sign it. You will then need to submit this form to administration (usually the registrar's office). You fin aid will probably be affected. It depends on how far into the term you are....if it is early in the term, and your fin aid has already been disbursed, you may be required to pay back the money. However, if the term is mostly completed, you usually do not have to repay the money. You can go back to school the next semester, though, and get fin aid like you normally would.

Some schools it affects the financial aid depending on the last date of classes attended. They then prorate the aid until the end of the semester and that is what you owe back to the school. This is true at many schools because the Federal govt asks them to return the unused money.

A medical withdrawal can be done generally at any time with a doctors note (this includes mental).

Ask your school for thier policy and procedure on this kind of situation.

Well yes if you can not go to college i would say it would effect your financial aid for college. Well it would be like having to have a note from the doctor, to get time off from work for a mental disorder. Then again too, you may be able to apply for SSI, or SSA, and get money that way, cause you are disable to continue on with your studies or work.
