It is the vapors coming from the new materials inside the cockpit of the car. Coming off the glues, the plastics, leathers, carpits, foam in the seats.

Manufactures spend millions each year in testing facilities to ensure that their cars don't stink when new, hot or even very cold. They change chemicals and production methods to try and achieve, you might even say the perfect new car perfume.

There are some products on the market for cleaning the inside of a car that will bring that smell back, all but for a short time.

Mostly apholstery treatments, but also plastic softeners, glues, lubrications, rust inhibitors, etc. Depending on who's researching, "new car smell" includes anything from "volatile organic compounds," to carcinogens like benzene and styrene.

Deliscious stuff.
