By your use of "nasty" I assume you want the alcohol and not the root beer flavor, unlike everyone else has assumed here.
You'll need to boil the alcohol out and then recollect it. I would suggest pouring the schnapps into a pot and then bring it to a simmer. Place a bundt cake pan right side up over the pot (fill the gaps with whatever you have lying around if any gaps exist).
The bundt pan should have an opening in the middle, place a metal mixing bowl upsidedown over the bundt pan (the hole in the pan and the top of the bowl should not be touching) and then place a bag of ice on the bowl.
Alcohol will boil out, pass through the opening in the bundt pan, condense on the cold metal bowl and drip down to collect in the bundt pan.
You should have pure alcohol on top (A&W moonshine?) and nasty root beer flavor at the bottom (as the alcohol will boil at a lower temp).

You will have to distill it off and that is becasue of the differences in the boiling ranges within the liquid. As someone suggested, it would be far easier and cheaper to just buy some root beer or if you want just the alcohol, go purchase something else at the store. Remember, ethanol or grain alcohol is what you can consume. Methanol or wood alcohol is the non-consumable type.

Why bother? Get some root beer syrup. It doesn't have alcohol. All something like root beer schnapps is just root beer syrup and alcohol.

Why would you want to do that? If you just want root beer, it's cheaper to buy than schnapps.
The only way that it might even be possible would be to boil it--I remember hearing that when alcohol reaches a certain temp., it is boiled out.

Try freezing it, the alcohol should stay liquid longer than the "nasty old root beer" ?
this does away with an illegal moonshine still

Distill it. Then you will have clear alcohol & hot, flat root beer. Or give it away & try something else next time.

Use rootbeer syrup and you won't need to worry about things that aren't there.
