as puppies are very social creatures they should be up and about, exploring and playing. but remember, pups do spend a lot of time sleeping also, just the same as human babies. at such an early age they are still sleeping and eating purely to maintain energy for growing.

if ur pup is not up and about very much, then maybe he is not getting enough energy from food? here is a little guideline on how much ur pup should be eating for his size & weight: (all calculations are per day)

(6-11 weeks old)
0.5kg weight: 50g food
1kg weight: 85g food
2kg weight: 135g food
5kg weight: 245g food
8kg weight: 335g food
10kg weight: 390g food

also, if ur pup is not toileting very much, it is another good indication that he is not eating enough...
puppies should be fed 3 times a day, breakfast, lunch & dinner. the daily amount of food from the guide above should be divided up into 3 portions for each of these meals.

dont worry about over-feeding him. pups, unlike dogs will tend to stop eating when they are full because their greed and tendancy to beg hasnt set in yet- they eat purely to survive and dont know yet the joy of eating for "fun".

if ur problem persists, do take him to a vet, or at least call one. they will be more than happy to answer a simple questiion like this over the phone for free.

also, i do recommend feeding him the same food as the breeder was feeding him, as anything other than puppy food (dry) will more than likely be too rich for his little tummy and he may have trouble passing it. change in diet is a HUGE deal for a little pups stomach to handle.

hope i was able to help!! =)

Since you have only had your puppy for a couple of days, it is probably not eating much as it is not used to it's new surroundings. Just make sure to keep food available for it at all times since puppies tend to nibble small bits throughout the day and not eat big meals all at once. As for the sleeping, my vet told me that it is normal for pups to sleep a lot while they are still young. Believe me as a proud owner of a 7 month old Lab puppy, soon you will MISS having a mellow dog.

Some puppies metabolisms are slower than others. Some eat less, drink less, and tend to sleep a little more. I'd let the puppy eat and drink what it wants to, and sleep as much as it wants to for now. I think as soon as the puppy grows some more, it's going to get more and more energy. And then it will be into everything, getting under your feet, driving you nuts, like ALL puppies do!

As long as the puppy is eating, and able to pass wastes, I don't see the need to take it to a vet just yet. If it is looking sickly, then of course, do so. But if he/she looks good otherwise, and is not losing body weight, it should be ok for now.

I guess he's not a yellow lab...

Puppies need a lot of sleep. Try feeding him moist food and more water.

Maybe an occasional beer might help him, too, but then you have to watch out for contributing to the delinquency of minors (he's about 13 months old in dog years).

8 week old puppies should be going to the bathroom more than once a day. If they are getting enough to eat and drink, then the dog should have to go every couple hours. Something might be wrong with your pup.
