Or is it just the sad Illegal immigrants that come here for a better life?

Illegal = illegal. There is no way to pass judgement upon this statement.

I'm for seeing all 50 states get behind a common and unified concept/policy on dealing with illegal immigration. It's a problem, and needs to be dealt with. The problem needs to be well-handled, competently, professionally, ethically, and effectively.
The best way to make sure that really does happen is to get voters/citizens involved in discussing all the angles of the problem, figure out the 5 'w's, and seek reforms where necessary and possible to discourage people from abusing our immigration system anymore. Write your congressman to express your opinion and ask questions about it all, too. When your representatives are involved, then the problem will be looked at and dealt with.

Illegal = ruined, overcrowded schools, and hospitals, and drained services.
