You are just fine and can go to church the best way you can be. Those in church should not be judging you anyway, there is only one judge. However, remember, Jesus himself was a poor man and only wore cloths and sandals. Remember that, go to church and give thanks for your wonderful life on this beautiful earth. God bless you!

Your question was about 'unkempt' and then you describe what you have as far as clothing.
To be unkempt is to have poor hygeine, and the 'just out of bed' look for hair/face. No one is too poor to have a comb and a washcloth to have nice hair and clean bod with no body odor.
As for the clothes, put your best on, if that is the outfit you described that is terrific! It shows respect while entering into the House of God. Wearing flip flops, cut off blue jeans and a Megadeth t-shirt is inappropriate and plain rude.
You say that you go toward the back. How about being a bit daring at sit in the middle? People love to see new faces and will more probably acknowledge with a kind nod or smile. Your there for the right reasons.
Don't worry about the snobbish church 'fashionistas' who are decked out in their finest like they're going to a fancy restuarant and then gossip about what so and so wore. Those are the people your thinking of, don't worry. They don't have their priorities straight. Keep your head held high, give thanks to God that you have the opportunity to worship Him.

It is okay to go to church no matter what you look like. You shouldn't feel the need to stay away from others just because you feel your clothes aren't what you'd like them to be. If you are sincere and friendly they should be happy to have you there. And frankly if they aren't then this isn't much of a church anyway and I'd find another that is a loving and nurturing place.
But for yourself, you might try looking in vintage clothing stores or second hand stores. They often have things that are very inexpensive and simple that would be perfect to wear for church. But honestly, there should never be a problem being accepted in church because of the way you're dressed, but sometimes I know that there can be.

You should go to a church where you feel comfortable. If the church members judge you for your appearance, then that's not a very accepting relationship you should burden yourself with.
Church is for all people, not just some.
That said, clean yourself up the best that you can. You should go to church honoring your own body in respect for the man that created you in his own image.
Lastly, cheer up and pray for a stronger self confidence. You are a more deserving person than you would believe yourself to be.

Go to church, and as far as your wardrobe goes, just do the best you can.
And try not to worry about people looking down on you. Some people might, but I'm sure most won't -- not if they're halfway good Christians, anyway.
Try not to worry about that, because you're not there to please them or impress them.
You're there to worship God, and He's not going to give you a hard time about your clothes. He'll be happy to see you there!

Church is not about clothes. Go to church for what you feel in your heart. If you go to a church wearing the best you have and you are not welcomed then find another church.

In the church I attend, we dress up when we go to church because we want to show our respect for God. If your appearance reflects an attitude of respect for God, you are doing what's appropriate. It doesn't matter what clothing people are wearing as long as have made an attempt to be clean and are trying to show their respect with the neatest, most appropriate clothing they have.

ok the church was made to help the needy and poor so that shouldnt matter. jesus told his disciples to give to the poor and the widows. church offerings are supposed to go to furnish the temple and to help the poor and sick. i dont know what church you go to but if the people act all snooty and holier than thou in their fancy church shoes and suit and ties you need to find a different church. remember what jesus said that it would be easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven. also the story of the widows mite leaves the impression that she was held in higher esteem to god than all of the rich pharisees.

I do not believe that our Lord cares one iota about how you look in a building. you are there to talk to Him, so why would anyone care how another is attired? go to church, enjoy your time worshipping and ignore the hypocrites who may wish you gone from the building. just make sure you don't smell, you know, wash before going to church. Our Savior wore a robe and sandels, why can't you dress the way you can?
Blessings to you.

Don't feel like there's something wrong with you. You shouldn't care about the others at church. Yes, it's okay, don't even doubt it. GO TO CHURCH! It's wrong not to go. Forget those who look down at you -- you're better than they are.
But don't go attend church just to pray. You should become active in your religion. :o)
