I have suffered from depression for several years. Only recently was I diagnosed not only as being bipolar but also with having anxiety disorder. I sought help from my doctor and a psychologist, even members of my church, but nothing seemed to help. I have been on more medicine than I thought possible, with a different dosage for each, yet neither the medication nor the counseling has helped. I only got worse. In the end I had to drop out of college and I have since become a burden to my family. I try to take it a day at a time but I am unable to hold a job and am receiving no medical treatment at all. I don't know what to do anymore, and I just can't seem to get it together. Most of my family feels I am acting a child, so I can't talk to them about how I feel. With one action constantly on my mind I wanted to ask if is anyone out there who checked themselves into a mental institution and was the better for it? Did it help any? Cuz right now I'm standing on the razor's edge.

if you dont expect improvement you will always feel like this, i dont know that being in a hospital will help but it really cant hurt any more than you hurt now.

There's still a lot of things to try, don't give up.
A friend went into a mental institution for a week, and he's doing great now, ten years later, while he was suicidal at the time. So it can work.
Also, try exercise, which does release endorphins and is proven to be helpful.
For bipolar, you HAVE to take medication, and you have to accept that you have to take it for the rest of your life. Once your medication is adjusted, you can function very well, but you'll always have to take it.
For anxiety, you may find relief through talk therapy, or with medication. Lots of new medications are coming out all the time, so stick with it.
You may also find it useful to volunteer with others, or to give blood, so that you can see that your life has value.
Try reading the book, "Learned Optimism" by Dr. Seligman, which may help you overcome negative thoughts.
I feel for you, I really do. Good luck!

I'm pretty much in the same situation as you. Can't seem to come up out of the depression, and it really does affect your ability to function on even a daily basis. I couldn't find any solice in church either. No medical treatment, the symptoms only getting worse for me. Now I have developed a strange self-mutilating like problem. Keep trying to get help, even a hospital is better than nothing

If you feel you are to the point you can't be safe, go to the hospital. I personally have suffered through depression for years and it has taken medication and counseling to get better. I'd say you probably need counseling at least once a week for awhile (maybe even twice a week) until you can get stabilized.
It sounds like your family doesn't understand what's going on with your depression. You need to be honest with them and tell them what your going through.
Find things to keep you busy and try to make goals for yourself once you start to feel better. I know motivation is hard to come by, but even volunteering is something you can do that will get you out of the house and make you feel better about yourself.
Good luck!

nicely, you at the instant are not asserting something i've got not theory, so once you're loopy, i'm, too. I proceed residing regardless of it for the time of ignoring the international at great. I seldom watch national information and by no skill worldwide using fact i'm purely not fascinated, until it fairly is something stunning like some disaster that catches my interest. I actual have observed that regardless of what's taking place exterior my on the spot section it has by no skill affected me in any appreciate, so i don't care who's in place of work or who we are at warfare with, etc. enormously who we are at warfare with. Calling the invasions we do as we communicate wars is laughable. in case you may count selection the numbers and phone the bodies of every physique who died daily; it fairly is not a warfare. i think of that even the media helps the view that little concerns interior the long term. have you ever observed how some tale will seize their interest and that they are going to flog it and push it for even nonetheless long they could and then something else will ensue and the 1st one will disappear from all reporting; as though it by no skill occurred. You by no skill understand the result or the alternative, if any. it fairly is purely not significant anymore. using this relatively insular attitude i'm getting my exhilaration and cost from the failings I do daily. looking after the animals with whom I stay and any others i can attain. (I feed multiple wild creatures daily.) Giving exhilaration to my little ones, who're grown, supplies me exhilaration and keeping up with what's taking place of their lives is likewise exciting to me. yet you're right. at last each physique fails and that i've got everyday on account that i became into 12 that if I lived long sufficient for that to ensue, then i might kill myself in some nonpainful and noninvasive way. I actual have already desperate upon the attitude, which demands no methods and no counsel, basically the time remains unclear. One could continually keep in mind the suggestion of Epicurus, who I paraphrase right here, while existence ceases to be a exhilaration the only option for a thinking guy or woman is to end it, and he did.
