I think cartoons are fine for kids. I can't stand people saying cartoons are bad .. kids shouldn't watch TV.
Both my kids watch cartoons and they are fine. Of course they are still young ( 5 & 2 ) so they watch Nickjr. and playhousedisney. They have learned a lot from them and we sit and watch them together and we play the games together that they are doing on TV.

Let me ask you this: how many well adjusted adults do you know who watched cartoons as a kid? The answer is probably many if not most adults watched cartoons as a kid - in fact, some still do. Besides, many cartoons have very educational themes and the medium is a great way to get the message across to kids.

The harm comes not from watching cartoons per se, but watching too much TV in general. Kids need to be outside playing more often and watching TV less often.

That being said, I do question whether cartoons like Sponge Bob and some of the other after school and Saturday morning toons are appropriate for kids given their violent themes or disrespectful/crude characters. But even then it's probably not a huge deal if they aren't watching too much and as long as there are more positive images to give balance.

I didn't allow my daughter to watch a lot of television. I didn't want her to grow up an unintelligent couch potato. Consequently she now reads beyond a college level, can read in three languages,(English French and Spanis) converse proficiently in three languages (English, French and American Sign), has maintained a 4.0 GPA for the past two years in college, is in the college student government as well as sitting on City Council, works part time and is carrying an 18 credit course load this, her last semester. When she was growing up I felt there were other things that were far more creative than watching cartoons.

I don't think so. We do limit our 3 year old sons TV time., no more than 30 minutes a day, if that. The less TV he watchs the better I feel. He does watch PEEP on TLC, it is very age appropriate and offers good life lessons. I know too many parents who use the TV as a baby sitter. It takes dedication to avoid the TV. ps-my son loves the movie CARS and 101 Dalmations, the first movies he has seen.

pbs has some really great cartoons that encourage children to think and learn. I let my son watch them in the morning and thats it for the day. I really see no harm in any cartoon but some of them are just pointless these days.

I only allow my daycare kids to watch playhouse Disney in the mornings. I personally don't feel that a lot of cartoons are for the real young kids anymore. There is way to much violence in them.

It depends on what they're watching. Play age-appropriate shows for the child, and also something educational. If you show them appropriate things, it will be a positive affect.
