I dye my hair every few months. My hair is probably fried. Well take out the probably. What should I put in my hair to help keep it healthy even with all the dying? Is there a special product or home made remedy? I've heard of things like avacado and mayo and then conditioning balm from the store. So can I get your opinion? Thanks.

I am sorry your hair is dead.

Of course all hair is composed of specialized dead skin cells that grow in stocks. Any doctor will tell you that your hair is dead and once it is dead you can’t repair it, all you can do is take good care of the roots. Hair conditioner can smooth out the hair, dies can color it, hair spray or mousse can glue it into place, but once it leaves the root it is death. All those shampoos with vitamins that claim to help the hair are just lies. Essential oils in these shampoos just help keep it smooth.

The actual process of hair dieing is either removing the color (bleaching) or penetrating the hair and dissolving the color and replacing it or using Henna to physically bind with the hair cells.

If you use avocado or mayo then you are smoothing the hair (which any shampoo or hair treatment with oil in will do). It could add protein, if the hair cells were alive to take it in, but once you dye your hair the damage is done and it can’t be changed until new dead cells arrive to replace the old ones. Those expensive treatments for damaged hair, especially those that claim to restore or repair hair cells are calculated lies.

Another problem with dying your hair is that it the acid can weaken the cells and cause breakage. The chemicals can dry the hair out (again oils will help), the scalp can be dried or damaged or the hair roots themselves can be harmed. Bleach is a great sanitizer and cleaner if it gets into the root it can kill or stun the root. Mixing hair dyes and hair treatments can cause problems because a combination of plant products (like Henna which is a lot of hair dyes) can change the color, increase or magnify existing or latent problems (like damage to the hair cells, with can result in breaking or the two products could change the color).

According to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hair_dye
""Hair lightening," referred to as "bleaching" or "decolourising," is a chemical process involving the diffusion of the natural colour pigment or artificial colour from the hair. This process is central to both permanent hair colour and hair lighteners.

All permanent haircolour products and lighteners contain both a developer, or oxidising agent, and an alkalizing ingredient as part of their ammonia or an ammonia substitute. The purpose of this is to:

raise the cuticle of the hair fibre so the tint can penetrate,
facilitate the formation of tints within the hair fibre,
bring about the lightening action of peroxide.
When the tint containing the alkalising ingredient is combined with the developer (usually hydrogen peroxide), the peroxide becomes alkaline and diffuses through the hair fibre, entering the cortex, where the melanin is located. The lightening occurs when the alkaline peroxide breaks up the melanin and replaces it with new colour."

Acids are alkaline liquids.
When you raise the cuticle of the hair you are making the actual hair scales stand out thus giving it a rough feel. Oils will help that.

I have dyed and have naturally dry hair, and you need to find a good shampoo and conditioner. Probably not one that is super cheap -- ask your hair dresser to recommend one in your budget. Cholesterol -- a type of conditioner usually found with the African American products -- helps, but I did not like it because of the way it made my hair feel. Avocado is a good moisturizer as is olive oil. The Frizz Ease products and the Matrix smoothing system are two of my favorites as far as what you can buy in a store.

Please use all these tips:- 1. Eat correctly, with a enhanced meat diet, but not too much at once. 2. Take at least a desert spoon full of virgin olive oil per day. 3. Do not smoke or chew tobacco. If you are now smoking, please give it up, ASAP. 4. A god exercise program will help tone up your entire body. 5. Use a moderately firm hair brush, brush your hair for at least a half hour a day. Please remove any loose hair from the brush, after every brushing session, or even during brushing, if there is too much hair on the brush. This will tend to stimulate hair growth. 6. Use a gentle shampoo to wash your hair, at least once a week, but not more then twice a week. "An apple a day keeps the doctor at bay; two apples a day, might bring him to stay,"

I used to dye my hair every other month too. I used Pantene products on my hair. My hair was so shiny and healthy looking even the hairdressers couldn't tell I dyed it myself. When I would tell them, they couldn't believe it.

Thanks for the idea, NannieKC. I will try the Nexxus, just for something new. I do like to mix it up sometimes, but seems I always go back to Pantene...

I've been dying my hair for over 10 years....I have always used Sebastians Potion 9 ( it's a leave in conditioner treatment ), my hair is as soft as a baby, I always get compliments on how healthy and shiny it looks.

I see that some people have said the same thing, but Pantene products work for me. I suggest the green one -- Sleek and Smooth (or something liek that). But ughh. I can't stand the fact of people putting mayo in their hair. I wouldn't do that. I dunno if it works -- but hot oil works. :o)
