Male mosquitoes live off of nectar and don't bite anyone.
Female mosquitoes have the same biology and live off of nectar as well. But, nectar isn't enough. When a female mosquito wants to reproduce (lay her eggs) she needs things that she can't get from nectar and that her body can't provide. The only way she can find what she needs is in the blood of an animal.
So only female mosquitoes bite, and they only do it when they want to have children.
For extra credit: The venom that a female mosquito uses (the males don't have it) is actually an anti-blood coagulant. It makes the blood flow smoother through the mosquitoes needle like nose. The reason why it itches is because most creatures are allergic to it.
What makes the female mosquito so deadly is that they have parasites. There are little bugs that live inside the mosquito, they don't bother the mosquito, but they do live in the mosquito's salivary glands (where the female mosquito mixes in its venom). When a mosquito bites a person then it injects the salivary and a few of those bugs. The most famous of these bugs are Malaria, Yellow Fever, and West Nile Fever.
West Nile Fever kills Americans each year since it is foreign to the US there are few people with an immunity to it. In most people the virus isn't bad, but if someone is frail or weakened by illness then viruses exploit that and try to take over. Malaria is the single greatest disease threatening Africa. AIDS is more deadly, but (currently) there are many more malaria suffers and for every person sick with Malaria that removes 3 people from the possible work force; the nurse or family member that has to care for them, the doctor that has to teat and watch them, and the person themselves. There are many strains of malaria so immunity to one doesn't necessarily make you immune to another. In this way it is like the flu, only more dangerous.

Wikipedia..... as hostile to a syringe's usually tender needle, the mosquito proboscis is rather serrated, which leaves a minimum type of issues of contact with the floor being pierced — this reduces nerve stimulation to the point the position the "chew" isn't felt in any respect, it truly is often the case A mosquito's era of feeding is often undetected; the chew merely will change into glaring via immune reaction it provokes. even as a mosquito bites a human, she injects saliva and anti-coagulants. For any given man or woman, with the initial chew there is no reaction yet with next bites the body's immune equipment develops antibodies and a chew will change into infected and itchy interior of 24 hours.

The females require protein for egg development and laying, and since the normal mosquito diet consists of nectar and fruit juice, which has no protein, most must drink blood. Males differ from females, with mouth parts not suitable for blood-sucking.
