Yes. You are absolutely correct to state that we don not obtain satisfaction in fulfilling all our material desires. The happiness derived out of that is only temporary and flickering.
Srimad Bhagavatam, Canto7,Chapter6, texts 3 & 4.
Prahlada Maharaja continued: My dear friends born of demoniac families, the happiness perceived with reference to the sense objects by contact with the body can be obtained in any form of life, according to one's past fruitive activities. Such happiness is automatically obtained without endeavor, just as we obtain distress.
Endeavors merely for sense gratification or material happiness through economic development are not to be performed, for they result only in a loss of time and energy, with no actual profit. If one's endeavors are directed toward Krishna consciousness, one can surely attain the spiritual platform of self-realization. There is no such benefit from engaging oneself in economic development.
We are spiritual in nature and eternal, but we are encaged in a temporary body which is going to perish in any time.
Our ultimate goal should be to "Go Back to Godhead" and revive our eternal relationship with God.
Bhagavad gita 2.66.
One who is not connected with the Supreme [in Krishna consciousness] can have neither transcendental intelligence nor a steady mind, without which there is no possibility of peace. And how can there be any happiness without peace?

In most cases, people simply pursue the goal that is dictated by their culture. A small number of people choose to derive their goals from their own introspection. An even smaller number have no goal and simple live only to fulfill the most universal goal, which is to breed and die. Personally, I choose the introspective route, as I consider the other two to be a waste of my intelligence and creativity.

Have fun. It doesn't matter what your goal is, but if you aren't enjoying doing it, what's the point?
