If your asian and tan, that means you aren't as privilaged and probably work in the rice fields of another job that requires hard labor. if you are fair, that gives the perseption of wealth and status. tanning is bad for your skin anyway. maybe that's why we age so well?

here is the reason
most asians are naturally darker so what they do is that they want really pale skin because it shows that they have alot of money to buy lotions and other whitening agents on top of that it was a common believe way way way back many many years ago that only royalty had white fair skin because the don't need to work in the fields under the blazing sun furthermore in most asian countries there is a idolizing of the west and that is why they want white skin to be more like white ppl
however i am not sure if boys like it but i don't think they would mind as long as u are well proportioned and nice looking
but personally i think in a more western society people with darker skin like really really tanned are not as appealing as someone with light skin because to some ppl having dark coloration can be a turn off cuz it is "intimidating"
as for western ppl wanting tans it shows that they go on lots of vacations in tropical places which is where they seem to be tanned from however this is not the total case
basically subcontiously our skin tone shows our wealth and that is why some ppl go to various length to obtain the result they want

I guess you could say that East Asian societies/women have mindsets similar to 18th century European societies/women. To have fair skin means you don't have to work in the fields; it's a sign of the upper class. Obviously people aren't consciously thinking "That girl is really tan...she must work outside a lot," but fair skin has continued to be a standard of beauty. As for what men think about it, I guess that's for men to answer. If they do prefer fair skinned girls, I would say it's because that they know fair skin is preferred in society, that it's considered more beautiful than darker skin--it's a social construct.
As an Asian American girl with a natural yellower/tanner complexion, I don't see why I have to see my body as deficient in some way or why I have to conform to a standard appearance (which Asians are doing anyways by cosmetic surgery for almost everything), but I understand that the cultural/societal preference among Asians is paler skin (and will probably continue to be as long as East Asian societies continue to be as homogeneous as they are).

Who wants to have darker skin, when you are already a dark-skinned? I mean, its a thing that most Asian girls want, to have a fair skin. Like those advertise on Television.
And as you know, all girls wants to be beautiful, to attract guys and also feel good. The only thing I dont understand is why Europe girls wants to be tan...? I mean they flawless fair skin, and most guys likes it. So as in this case, most Asians love to have fair skin. Like me, I want to have fair skin, so I look good about myself and also my skin.

I was born tanned but some asian people keeps asking me "why are you so tanned?". It gets kind of annoying when they try to make me more fair skinned. But I'm still happy with my natural skin tone. I think whatever is natural is fine.

i think its common in every race that's not naturally fair skinned for the people of the race to want to be lighter because in every race light skin is seen as beautiful...and naturally some people with fair skin want to tan I'm sure they don't to be super dark but they don't want to be really fair

Because in the olden days, ligtht skin ment you were rich and spent less time working(in the sun) Also, we want to stay away from the sun so that our skin will age slower with bless wrinkles and spots. Light skin usually means healthy.and young.

Where I come from tanning skin and bleaching skin is considered out of style and being the color God made you is "the style." Every color is beautiful and we all need to stop focusing on color and dictating what color a person's skin color should be.

In Asia, white skin is sign of privilege and has been for thousands of years. It's pretty obvious why, if you think about it.
