Yes, fondent is edible. That would be so sad to spend all that time creating a beautiful cake and then having to peel the decorations off, wouldn't it?!

It is edible and, in my experience, it tastes like what I imagine play-doh would taste like if it had a little sugar in it...Pastry Chefs and cake decorators use it mostly to decorate cakes in a streamlined fashion, and because it stiffens you can do really cool things with it, like make realistic looking flowers, etc. Also it serves as a protective outer coating for the cake to preserve the cake's freshness and moisture level.

I work in a bakery and I know staff members who eat the fondent out of the tub!
What you really want in boston icing without the coconut. You put that on bread add 100's & 1000's and the put more boston icing... i swear it tastes the best but don't eat too much because you will throw up!!!

Yes, it is used on wedding cakes all the time. It is made with a lot of sugar.
