You see there are these Gurus. They contemplated on the philosophy of life and made some profound distillation of truths to answer many questions. Many others follow this.
Somewhere along the line, people born to those who followed these philosophies got indoctrinated in these philosophies and adopted the same. Thus we had religions.
I would say in the modern world, every one should think of the philosophy that seems to be working best for their mind in answering what they are concerned with. To belong to a religion because you were born to parents who adopted that religion may be meaningless.
We do need the philosophies to guide us and need this belief to resolve many questions.

I don't think religion will ever be obsolete, even though individual religions (including Christianity) may come and go. And here's why:
Religion appeals to too many generally basic human needs. The need to belong. The need to feel connected to something bigger than oneself. The need for transcendence. The need for the purely emotional and intuitive stimuli that religion (and spirituality) can so often provide. For most people, these needs are simply not met by science. And for that reason, in my opinion, religion will not be obsolete for a very long time -- not until human brain structures change to the point where the limbic system and parietal lobes don't function the same way that they do now.

No, there is still prejudice and discrimination against many different people because of their religion, (as well as race, ethnicity, right to self-determination) e.g.--Chechens, Kosovans, Christians and animists in Darfur, all non-Muslim peoples in Iran as well as the Arab Sunni Muslim minority, Israelis, etc....
I am not against religion but look at the politicization of fundamentalists forms of religion and you can see the problem. It is just as wrong to take away someone's religion, which is part of their identity. I am bored by the school system and popular culture which looks down on any form of spirituality but then turn around and puts out commercialized nonsense on sex and celebrities.. I am all for diversity and a secular society, but it is too pushy these days.

No. As long as there are human beings, there will always be religion. Some people have to have that form of guidance in their life. It's been here for many moons and it's not going anywhere. In some way or another, there will always be people who need it regardless of how useless others find it.

Are we obsolete?
It is too late at night to get into our societal need for a reference point that dovetails into our need for harmony in the neighborhoods.

I believe religion to be obsolete, yes; but not spirituality. There is a difference. Spirituality breeds love, peace, and harmony. Religion breeds hatred and ignorance.

You would think that with all that science has proved and shown to be "truth", we would have evolved beyond the need for such archaic beliefs. However, some children grow up faster than others - give it time and eventually the rest will come to see the errors of their ways!

i dont believe so. I'm agnostic, and i thought it was until i asked a question here that was simply "what if one day god was proven not to exist". i was surprised as to how many people said they's lie cheat and steal just becuase there was no god, and therefore no fear of punishment. so i am forced to now believe that some people just NEED religion to not be morons. sad, i know :-/
