In Manhattan, you will find: Chinatown, Greenich Village, Union Square, Times Square and Chelsea. The N train in Manhattan has all those stops, they'll leave you where you need to be.

You clearly have not been in Forever 21! It's like heaven on earth for vintage. So is H&M. They are the two main stores that I go too for that "hipster" feel. Also try a second hand store, sometimes you can find really nifty stuff in there. Good luck! :)

Soho, Chinatown, Times Square, Greenwich Village (aka the village, and it totally rox!), 5th avenue (though im not too sure about the food part) and Chelsea. Those places are all amazing to visit.
