I selected the tool, but I dont know how to apply it. Brush tool, specifically.

ok, first make sure that your layers palette is up if not go to window, then show layers... after that make sure what you are wanting to use is on that layer ( by selecting it int the palette) then hit control D to deselect any marqee that you have thats maybe making it unable to use and then try it from there... add details to this Q if that doesnt work....

There are some really easy visual guidebooks for Photoshop. You can check amazon.com and flip though some.
What I mean by a visual guidebook is that everything it teaching you, it shows you how you will do it. Then you can look at the book and see if what you are doing is right. It will teach you all the basics of how to use Photoshop.

Read the help and tutorial pages. There a lot of free tutorial online where you could get some ideas on the tools.
