I don't understand the purpose of a shower cap. Do you wear it so that your hair doesn't get wet when you shower? That's kind of gross.

Don't laugh at my question; I'm serious.

kitty61, it's gross because your hair's not getting washed.

Yes, that's the reason. In the old days, women would get their hair done in the salon once a week, and try to save the hairstyle all week by not getting it wet. Yuck.

That would be why most people wear a shower cap when in the shower. If someone pays for a hair-do, like say your mom, they want to keep it nice and dry for as long as possible. The older generation of ladies, (my mom) go to the beauty shop once a week for their "dos". Most of us just wash our hair every day.

Well, the name "shower cap" is kinda self-explanatory. You wear it in the shower to keep your hair from getting wet. Why in the world does everyone think that everybody in the world washes their hair everyday? It isn't necessary, especially if your hair isn't oily or dirty, and, in fact, your hair is more manageable if it isn't washed everyday. Plus, some people don't have a hairstyle that lends itself to washing and just letting it dry by itself with a comb run through it a little bit. Some people, also, don't have naturally curly hair so they have to set their hair on curlers or it takes too long to blow it dry in the morning.

ya i get where you are comin' from sister. why wear a shower cap to protect your hair from getting wet when the purpose of a shower is to wash yourself (hair is usually included)? I feel like a dork cuz I have like 3 shower caps and I have never used them :) i suppose people shower and don't wash their hair. huh, kinda makes me think now . . .

bago is right, that's where it came from. My mother had her hair done at the salon every week. And she would wrap it in toilet paper when she slept to try to keep it in place. All the women did it. People didn't wash their hair all the time back then.

Frankly, I think people wash their hair too much now. There is something to be said for letting the oils from your scalp reach your hair a bit - makes it healthier. Every 3 days would be better than every day.

The purpose of a shower cap is to take a shower. but not screw up a hairdo like a perm.

It's not necissarily gross, there are reasons why people don't get their hair wet. And yes, it is to keep your hair dry. I use it to keep my hair the way it is overnight so I don't ruin it for the next day. I'm sure there are other reasons also.
