There are leadership opporunities. You can get your education paid for. The Army gives you the chance to be physically fit. You'll make friends in the Army that you will keep for life. Medical benefits are free. You will always have good housing, decent food, and money in your pocket. If you're married with kids, the benefits are even better. Your family will be well treated. Finally, there is a good chance that you will travel and see the world.
The down side is you wait in line, A LOT! You will have to be away from your family for long stretches of time due to deployment.
That's about it. I mean, the obvious thing is the fact that we're at war and you will be in Iraq and/or Afghanistan at least twice in your military enlistment. I do encourage you to look at the retirement and stick with it. I mean, if you go in at 18, how many other jobs can you retire at 38 with FULL BENEFITS!?
It's worth is and time flies. I'm on year 21, now.

Pride. The disadvantage would be you turning out like the first two loser scu8mbags that answered this question or the chickens that don't show a screen name. Hooah, i loved the army so much in went in twice, enlisted and then went ROTC an earned a commission. You will know the honor when you first wear your uniform in public.

Free health care for life, discipline, training, self respect, respect from others. These are all good things.
As for the bad, much of the training you receive in the military does not translate directly into civilian careers (and no I am not talking of infantry training).

Advantages are you are more likely to get away with being lazy and incompetent than in the Marine Corps.
Disadvantages are that you're not going to be trained as well as a Marine.
