That is funny you should ask that question, my pit bull does the same thing, and when it gets to really feeling good, he nibbles. Plus, he marches with his back legs, it is too cute!

What are you doing patting the dog's butt? I mean, are we talking hind-quarters here, or butt-hole itself? Furthermore, is this an isolated experience, or have you deliberately sought out a wide range of pitt bulls' butts to pat? And if you've done that, what kind of quality events have you missed out on in life while you've been running around the country side patting pitt bulls' butts willy-nilly?

The same reason boxers or boston terriers or great danes or any other dog licks it's lips when you pat it's butt. Heck, my cat licks her lips when I pat her butt....

There is no real reason for this. Most dogs do it, no one really knows why though. And just because a dog is a pit bull doesn't mean it's mean.

I've noticed that all kinds of dogs do that (not just pits). I have no idea why.

It's just their habit. They probably don't even notice that they do that.
