PHONE them and tell them that you are her sister, and they usually fall for that one.
all the best with your friend and her recovery.

Normally hospital staff are able to tell you whether or not someone is in the hospital.
An anorexia clinic is rather sensitive so they may not.
You could try and ring to find out if they won't tell you if she is there you could always ask them to give her a message to contact you.
That way they won't be breaching any confidentiality.
Of course it won't help if she's not there or doesn't want to see you,but then that would be a wasted trip anyway.
Good luck to you and your friend.

Just phone the hospital, find out the visiting times, and ask if your friend can have visitors today. Explain you're planning a five hour drive to get there, and they should tell you if she's no longer a patient there.

Well that's the key kiddo. Try to get a hold of a family member or someone who has access to this data. I can only assume that they will have to give authorization for you to get the data you need. Hospitals (here in the US) don't provide just anyone with significant data regarding a patient. Hellow law suit.

i work in a hospital, although confidentialty is of the utmost importance, just ask if your friend is comfortable, if she is still in hospital the nurses will say yes she is comfartable and if she has been discharged, they will say, sorry we have no patient of that name in here, hope this helpsxx, that way you will find out if she is still a patient, please be aware that sometimes the patient may ask for no visitors though, xx
