I am cooking chicken wings for the super bowl tomorrow and I found them to be badly freezer-burned. Can you get sick from foods that are like this, and if yes what are the symptoms?

Freezer burn ruins the taste of your food. Throw it away and go to the store and buy some more chicken wings and cook the whole entire batch. If you need to re-freeze these chicken wings after they've been cooked, then first wrap them in aluminum foil, then wrap then in plastic wrap or plastic freezer baggies.

I don't know if freezer burn is bad for your health, but I do know that it ruins the taste of food, ice cream, etc.. Just get rid of it and replace it with some fresher wings.

Cheers and enjoy the game!

Freezer burned food will probably be dry and will have lost some of its flavor but it will not make you sick. Bacteria can not grow in frozen food. If you are preparing them with some kind of sauce it will help put some of the moisture back into them. For future reference a food saver (vacuum sealer) works great. Food will last for 3 or 4 years at least without freezer burn. I wouldn't be without one.

While a food with freezer burn is safe to eat, the quality is lower. You can cut away freezer burn spots either before or after cooking. If a food is heavily freezer-burned, it may be desirable to discard it for quality reasons.

Alberto,

Freezer burn simply means that the chicken thawed a little and then froze again. This is what caused the ice all over it.

No one will get sick, but the wings won't taste the same, they will be tough or flavorless.

You can eat them , but they will never ask you to cook for them again, and if anyone gets sick they will probley sue you. in BC Canada some of the stores sell you freezer burnt meats at 1/2 price, I would not feed that stuff to my dog.

freezer burnt foods will not cause you to get sick unless they have thawed and been refrozen at some point. the only thing wrong with freezerburnt foods will be the taste- they clearly have a distinct freezer taste.

i would buy fresh wings

While it's not bad for you, it will definitely taste different. I'd recommend getting new ones or a really good sauce to mask the freezer burn taste.
