OK, I just got my first job and I am trying to develop a monthly household budget. I am quite a good cook, but I am a little unsure of how much per month I will need to budget for food.

I will most likely eat a light breakfast at home each day, and a pretty decent dinner each night. Lunch will most likely be a sandwich taken with me, or perhaps leftovers. Any lunches eaten out will come from a different piece of the budget. And of course, on the weekends I would want to budget for all meals at home, and will budget elsewhere for any meals out.

Right now I have the number set at $250 per month, so around 60+ dollars a week, do you think that is anywhere close???

I think that is perfect, and in fact, maybe a little too much! Between my husband and I, we usually spend around 150-170 a month, so you could do very well off with that!

I am 20 and a single female that lives alone, I generally spend b/t $50 and $100 a week. Usually closer to $50. I just make sure I have frozen meals in the freezer that are easy to grab when I am tired or need something easy to take to work. The Lean Cuisine and such are always going on sale from 30-50% off. Aside from that I keep alot of oatmeal and cereal that have a longer life span so the only things that need to be replenished are the produce and meat. That usually is apples, carrots, and whatever produce might be on sale at the time. As for meat, just keep your eyes open for a good sale. I can usually give it more life span by keeping it in the freezer and thawing it the night before if I know I will be having it for dinner tomarrow night.

my suggestion is to try it and see how it works out for you. keep all reciepts from the food you eat and freeze any leftovers in single serving containers that you can take to work with you for lunch.

personally, i think you should keep your food all in one budget, regardless of where you eat-- that way you can see how much you truely spend on food in a month rather than what you are eating at home.

60$ a week is really good...you should have no problem....the biggest saver is taking your lunch everyday...sandwiches with a thermos of soup and chips is always cheap...cookies are always a plus....good luck..
