License plates in 39 of the 50 states in the USA are made by prison inmates. Nine states employ private companies (primarily Waldale Manufacturing in Nova Scotia and Irwin-Hodson in Portland, Oregon). In Kansas and Wyoming, mentally and physically disabled residents of those states make the plates.

Yes, in some prisons they certainly do. My son spent some time in a prison in Minnesota and his job was putting them into the boxes for shipping. I used to tease him all the time about making license plates in prison, although for some reason he didn't find it one bit funny.

In Michigan they are made at the Gus Harrison Regional Facility in Adrian, MI.

In some states they do. They used to in PA but after Western State Penitentiary in Pittsburgh closed I have no idea what they do now.

yes in wapaun wisconsin they make licence plates and get payed mabey 30 cents an hour

Yes, actually here in california they are made up north in San Quentin. when we get new plates in the mail, the envelope says it all.

In Nevada, they used to.
They just took that away from them because some union complained that it was "taking jobs away" from blue collar workers.
They outsource it now to some company.

Crazy.
