I would say not so much, only because they are fringe "religions" that only spring up where we use their land/resources to our own advantage, and usually only for a short time. The cults don't have staying power due to that and have nothing to bring to the table.

Unless...you are using them to prove that even the old pagans imagined "god" being in the sky and bestowing goods upon them. The deists aren't so different...

Funny, as I was reading the article on wikipedia I was thinking "oh, this is sympathetic magic". The next line said exactly that.

Wow, entire religions based on gaining material things? Actually, that's what most organized religious groups are based on. At least these "cargo cults" are honest about it.

Fascinating stuff. I gave a presentation on the subject at the end of my course in "Anthropology of Religion". They sound simple, but they are among the most complex religions ever.
