Most people I know who have moved on to short hair do it because the long hair is too much work for them. It isn't a specific age, its just whenever you get to the point where you would rather not deal with some of the hassle of long hair!

Well I am 34 and I have just had my long hair cut to a few inches below my ears. I think its more a matter of whether long hair suits you. I think if you are greying and your hair is straggly and long without a style cut in (a few layers or a fringe) then it can look quite dated.

although I think that really long hair doesn´t look on most women over 40 or so, I really don´t get it why almost all women cut their hair really short when they reach a certain age, I think that doesn´t do them any good either !! what happened to medium length???I know some women over 50 who still look nice and feminine with medium lenght hair..why don´t you try that?
